BEMT and the next chapter of sunscreen innovation
Sunscreen innovation starts with the ingredients formulators can use. In a July 20, 2026 Harvard Gazette interview by Alvin Powell, dermatologist Hillary Tsibris explains why bemotrizinol, or BEMT, is drawing attention.
BEMT absorbs both UVA and UVB radiation and is photostable, meaning it resists breaking down under light. Those properties offer useful possibilities for sunscreen formulation, although an ingredient alone cannot establish a finished product’s protection or performance.
In June 2026, the FDA announced BEMT’s addition to the sunscreen monograph for drugs sold without a prescription, allowing concentrations up to 6% under the applicable conditions. This expands the options available to U.S. sunscreen developers.
At AREV, we’re following this development as part of our interest in thoughtful daily sun care. This ingredient development is not FDA approval of AREV. Our final formula, SPF and performance claims remain pending finished product testing.
